Our award-winning, 2011 100% Ka`u coffee, is grown on the stomping grounds of Kamehameha, one of Hawaii's greatest Ali`i. At an elevation of 1800 feet, with an annual rainfall of about 70 inches, the cool nights and warms days are ideal for growing this excellent coffee.
Upon the closure of the the Ka`u Sugar Company in 1996, we started one of the first coffee farms in this pristine area called "cloudrest" because of the mountain, "Kaumaikeohu", that captures the clouds and carefully moistens the crop below.
Here in Moa`ula Ka`u, about 4 1/2 miles above the plantation town of Pahala, is where several other award-winning coffees are grown. This deep volcanic soil once grew sugar cane that flourished the land and today coffee has taken its place. As former sugar plantation workers, we were familiar with this area and my experience as a laboratory analyst confirmed it.
Our experience as coffee farmers, growing coffee in South Kona alongside our parents, is a positive asset. Our coffee is sold around the island in several stores. The Punalu`u Bake Shop in Naalehu, features my coffee and is a favorite among many.
Here, at the Hilo Farmers Market, samples are offered so that the malihini and kamaaina can taste the goodness of my Ali`i Hawaiian Hula Hands, 100% Pure Ka`u coffeee, that is farm direct. In July 2011, we were awared at the HCA, 3rd for Ka`u District and we are 4th in the State of Hawai`i.
