The Hilo Farmers Market is a must-see experience when you are on the Big Island. Over 200 local farmers and crafters sell their produce, crafts, gift items and tropical flowers in a festive outdoor atmosphere that recalls back to the old "plantation" days of early Hilo. Located at the corner of Mamo Street and Kamehameha Avenue in historic downtown Hilo, it's open all year round, every Wednesday and Saturday, from dawn til' it's gone.

What is this?
This is Longan. Longan in Cantonese (long-ngan) literally means "dragon eye". It is so named because of the fruit's resemblance to an eyeball when it is shelled (the black seed shows through the translucent flesh like a pupil/iris). The seed is small, round and hard. It is a tropical tree native to southern China. It can be found in most tropical area such as Thailand, Indonesia and Southeast Asia as well as in Florida and Hawaii. The tree can grow up to 30 feet in height, and the plant is very sensitive to frost. Longan trees require sandy soil and temperatures that do not typically go below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Available now at the Hilo Farmers Market daily through September.
